Review by Caleb O'Connell

The World We Left Behind by Nachtmystium is an album that showcases the band's unique blend of black metal, psychedelic rock, and post-punk. The album is a departure from their previous works, as it features a more introspective and melodic sound, while still retaining the aggression and intensity that fans have come to expect from the band.

The album opens with the hauntingly beautiful "Intrusion," which sets the tone for the rest of the album. The track features a mix of atmospheric synths, distorted guitars, and blast beats, creating a sound that is both eerie and exhilarating. The following tracks, "Fireheart" and "Voyager," continue this trend, with their soaring melodies and intricate guitar work.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "On the Other Side," which features guest vocals from Katatonia's Jonas Renkse. The track is a slow-burning ballad, with Renkse's emotive vocals adding a sense of vulnerability to the otherwise aggressive sound.

If the band's last album, 2014's The World We Left Behind, sounds recorded in a hurry, it's because, in a way, it is. In 2013, Blake Judd was arrested after being accused to steal his bandmembers' instruments as a source of income. Months later, after multiple accusations by fans of not sending merchandise and albums acquired via the band's Facebook page, he admitted he had gone the stealing route to buy drugs, and also affirmed he was gravelly addicted to heroin, opioids and medically-prescribed medicines after having injured his leg in 2009. Following these events, he quickly recorded this album, put it on sale and once again withheld it from fans for the same reasons. After a while, Century Media dropped the band from the contract, prompting their disbandment: Judd reformed Nachtmystium in later years and re-released/recorded some additional material, but disbanded them once again in 2020, this time definitely.Judd hadn't exactly his head on his shoulders while recording this final release: after a long filling intro, "Fireheart" goes into counter-time Ska rhythms that sound just weird, same for the Gospel-like melismas on closer "Epitaph of a Dying Star". Recycled melodies abound on the tracklist, and the constant, D-tuned, repetitive, gloomy post-Make a Change.. kill Yourself stale harmonies never get hypnotic or liberating, due to the monotone vocals, the frequent solo guitar overdubs and the basic first-position arpeggios. Even the lyrics, despite referencing Judd's infernal state of mind, sound still extremely vague, generic in their rise-from-the-ashes concept and filled with repeated stanzas ("Never a moment to be away / Trapped in this absence of existence / Hidden away, alone I pray for a quick death every day / Never a moment to get away / Locked in this absence of existence / Out of the way, day after day / Withering away to nothing").The recent consciousness has ostracized this band's existence and their supposed masterpieces, which show how can be dangerous the blind nationally-minded promotion at all costs and the desperate seek of the definitive "psychedelic, transcendental experience": it's the same thing that has crushed the rock/metal scene of all kinds transforming them into unrecognizable circus-like pyrotechnic manifestations of grandeur, morphing them into solo projects with all the other members out of the line-up with doubled/second-hand off-shots of the original or, in this case, forcing them into oblivion. The result is that most of the contemporary niche has almost completely forgotten Nachtmystium, a band that always sounded hopeless like their frontman. In a way, they deserved it.Highlights: "Into the Endless Abyss", "Epitaph of a Dying Star".

A dude gets his head blown off, members make it the album cover. A band records album in the storm ruined catacombs with dead bodies floating around. Throats and arms have been literally been ripped open on stage. Buckets of weeks old blood, guts, shit, and piss get tossed on audiences....and so on and so on. Buy THOSE guys' albums!
One guy rips some people off....Don't buy THAT guy's album!
I will never understand the mentality of humans. Get your shit straight people, this was just money.

I'd still buy the album, I'm sure the other band members deserve credit. This really does has a great atmosphere to it. As for the Blake thing, I hope he finds himself help and is able to pay off those he may have wronged. Baby steps I guess.

Well, some say Judd's a dick. It may be true or not so obvious. Anyway he made and is still making good music. And I must say that I didn't pay for a single album he made. I downloaded every one of them. So I give no shit about his rip offs. That's Internet, people, take it simple! =)
