Notes
- Almost 40 years after her death, and despite the all-encompassing rise of rock and pop music in the meantime, Billie Holiday still holds a rare, iconic sway over the imagination. She's the only jazz singer whose voice remains instantly recognizable to most people, young and old; and the very thought of her conjures up a host of images...the gardenia she wore in her hair, her Lady Day nickname, her fragile, world-weary face caught in a night-club spotlight.
- Billie Holiday was the purest Jazz Singer of all. A million miles from the "band canaries" - adjunct to the big swing orchestra designed to help provide a commercial edge - she was tough and wayward in her musical life and won the respect and admiration of the (exclusively male) jazz musicians she worked with. Her thin, bluesy delivery; her habit of subtly sliding between notes and the way she would modify and reinvent the rhythmic landscape of a tune, were daring to the record buyers but natural to Holiday. Listen to the way she takes a standard song and turns it into the story of her life. This musical alchemy, performed before our very ears, is the sound of a jazz genius at work.

Daughter of jazz guitarist . Godmother of and .
She made her debut circa 1930 singing in various nightclubs in Harlem. In early 1933, the producer heard her sing and was impressed by her talent. In 1935 he signed her to Records. She made her first recordings with . Also in 1935 she made her first appearance in a movie, with more roles in the 1940's. From 1939 she started recording songs with notable jazz artists of that time. In the 1950's, her voice was deteriorating as a result of unhappy relationships, heroin use and excessive drinking. In May 1959 she collapsed and was taken to the Metropolitan Hospital in New York City for treatment of liver and heart disease. She was arrested for heroin possession while she lay dying.
She was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 1991 and the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 2000 (Early Influence).

君は来て、僕を見て、僕を征服した;
君がまだそこにいると思えたから;
君がまだそこにいると思えたから;
What a pleasure to listen.

Didn't realise Philip Larkin was a fan. This Be the Verse is a favourite poem.
